History & Founding
The Knights of the Campanile was founded in 1926 at Trinity College Dublin, modelled on the sporting honour societies of Oxford and Cambridge. The society takes its name from the iconic Campanile bell tower at the heart of Trinity's Front Square — the symbolic centre of college life.
The society's colours — navy, light blue, and pink — reflect the Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin sporting tradition. These three colours appear on the tie worn by members, a mark of distinction earned through outstanding service to Trinity sport.
Mission
The Knights exists to recognise and celebrate outstanding contribution to sport at Trinity College Dublin. Members are elected for their service — as athletes, captains, administrators, and advocates — not for individual achievement alone.
The society's responsibilities include welcoming visiting sports teams to Trinity, providing financial assistance to representative athletes, and promoting the culture of collegiate sport across every code.
Membership
Membership is by invitation only. No more than 50 student Knights may be elected in any academic year, and election carries a lifelong honour. The society currently counts over 1,200 members worldwide — a network spanning every generation of Trinity sporting life.
Candidates are proposed and elected by the committee, following longstanding tradition. There is no application process.
